Ms. Avinou

My name is Sherry Avinou. Although this is my first year at River Heights School, I have been teaching since 1994, in schools in Canada, England and Korea. I am very excited about the upcoming year. There are so many fun things to learn in the Grade 4 curriculum!

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am the mother of two amazing daughters, Olivia and Vivien, both of whom attend River Heights School too. When I am not doing mom things or teacher things, I love to dance and to teach dance. I also enjoy triathlon and kayaking. Learning is a passion for me; I love to learn EVERYTHING! Reading is another past-time I enjoy. My favorite book is Anne of Green Gables, but I also love authors such as Shakespeare and Jane Austin.

I believe very strongly in a growth mindset. This means that even if I can't do something right now, I know that it is possible to achieve it with perseverance, creative and critical thinking, and a can-do spirit. We are capable of anything! You will hear your child talk about a mathematical mindset over the coming year. As a young student, I was told that I was good at English and Humanities, but not at Math. You were good at one or the other, but not both. That is not true! I feared Math all throughout my school years. However, Math is now one of my favorite subjects! Learning to really understand Math makes it a subject that we all can enjoy and excel in. I am excited to foster both a growth mindset and a mathematical mindset withing your children.

I am very grateful to have the opportunity to teach your child. It is sure to be a fantastic year, full of learning, exploring, creating and reflecting!
